What is a Commander precon?
A preconstructed Commander deck is a sealed, ready-to-play 100 card deck with its commander already chosen. You open it and you are playing, with no deckbuilding and nothing else to buy. Wizards has released 179 of them across 49 sets since 2010, and for most players they are the cheapest honest way into a colour combination they have never played.
They are also the format's common reference point. When someone says a deck is "a bit stronger than a precon", that is a real measurement, because precons are built to sit at a known power level and to play against each other rather than against optimised lists.
Which bracket do precons fall into?
Almost all of them are Bracket 2, the Core bracket, which is roughly what the official bracket system was calibrated around. A few modern ones push into Bracket 3. Every deck on this site is analysed with the same engine, so you can open any precon below and see its bracket, power score, and the specific cards driving both, rather than taking the box's word for it.
How do you upgrade one without breaking the bracket?
The useful distinction is between cards that make a deck smoother and cards that make it faster. Better lands, cheaper removal and an extra draw spell raise the floor without moving the bracket. Tutors, fast mana, Game Changers and two card infinite combos move it up, sometimes by more than expected. One early combo can take a Bracket 2 precon to Bracket 4 on its own, which is the single most common way an upgraded precon stops matching the table it was bought for.
If you are partway through upgrading one, paste the list into the deck analyser to see where it currently sits, check the mana base before adding another colour, and use the price checker to find where the money is actually going. You can also build the upgraded version alongside the original and compare the two.
Are precons legal in Commander?
Yes, every one of them, straight out of the box. They are legal 100 card singleton decks with a valid commander and a legal colour identity. The only thing worth checking is whether a card has been banned since the deck was printed, which the analyser flags automatically.
