The Multiverse Defends Itself
March of the Machine represents one of Magic's most ambitious storyline events: a simultaneous Phyrexian invasion across every plane of the multiverse. The Commander precons capture four different facets of the multiverse's resistance, with each deck representing a different tactical approach to the existential threat Phyrexia poses.
The mechanical themes of these precons — convoke, backup, knight tribal, and Phyrexian corruption through proliferate — reflect both the specific planes being defended and the variety of strategies the multiverse's heroes deploy against oil-spreading invaders.
Divine Convocation — Prayers of the Faithful
Kasla, the Broken Halo, leads Bant (white/blue/green) angels in a convoke-centered strategy where tapping creatures to pay for spells creates explosive mana efficiency. The deck builds a board of angel tokens, then uses convoke to cast massive spells for a fraction of their printed mana cost.
The convoke strategy rewards having many creatures simultaneously, which aligns perfectly with angel token generation. Once Kasla's engine is assembled — a board of angels that can collectively tap for dozens of mana worth of convoke — the deck casts game-winning spells that would otherwise be inaccessible this early in a typical Commander game.
Cavalry Charge — The Knights of Zhalfir
Sidar Jabari leads Zhalfir's legendary knights in an Esper (white/blue/black) knight tribal deck where the flanking mechanic and disciplined combat tactics create a tactical advantage on offense. The deck's knight tribal density enables powerful synergy between individual knights, with each member of the cavalry enhancing their squadmates.
The Cavalry Charge deck rewards strategic combat — knowing when to attack, how to exploit flanking, and which knights to prioritize for maximum synergy. The deck has a high skill ceiling for a precon, with multiple combat triggers and flanking interactions that reward detailed knowledge of your own deck.
Growing Threat — The Phyrexian Corruption Spreads
Brimaz, Blight of Oreskos, tells the tragic story of a hero corrupted by Phyrexian oil. Growing Threat is an Abzan (white/black/green) proliferate deck that spreads poison counters across the table while leveraging Brimaz's unique ability to create Phyrexian-themed tokens. The deck wins through the proliferate pathway — accumulating poison counters on opponents until they reach ten.
The deck's poison strategy requires a fundamentally different approach to deckbuilding than traditional Commander strategies. Rather than maximizing damage or board presence, Growing Threat optimizes its poison delivery system and proliferate engine for reliable ten-poison finishes.
Call for Backup — Rally the Reinforcements
Bright-Palm, Soul Awakener, leads Naya (white/red/green) in the backup mechanic's premier Commander showcase. Backup triggers when a creature enters the battlefield, placing +1/+1 counters on another target creature and granting it the entering creature's abilities until end of turn. The deck builds around maximizing these backup triggers through enters-the-battlefield effects and methods of repeatedly triggering backup.
The deck's backup strategy creates situations where a fresh creature entering provides immediate value — both growing another creature through +1/+1 counters and sharing powerful keyword abilities. Chains of backup triggers can create game-winning combat steps where a single attack involves multiple creatures with unexpected ability combinations.
Call for Backup rewards creative thinking about ability combinations. Each creature's backup value depends partly on which creatures it can target, and experienced pilots develop an eye for the most devastating ability-sharing combinations their deck can assemble.
