Fallout Commander — War Never Changes

The Fallout Commander decks represent one of Magic's most successful licensed crossover products, bringing the iconic post-apocalyptic RPG franchise to the Commander format with four decks that each capture a distinct faction and playstyle from the Wasteland. From Caesar's ruthless military Legion to the Brotherhood of Steel's technological obsessions, from the mutations of the Wise Mothman to the scrappy ingenuity of the survivors, each deck tells a different story about surviving after civilization ends.

These products launched in March 2024 alongside a dedicated Fallout set of cards, making Fallout one of the most extensively represented crossover IPs in Magic history. The mechanical designs carefully map Fallout's game systems — energy, radiation, factions, and survival mechanics — onto Commander archetypes, creating a product line that works both as fan service and genuine competitive precon decks.

The Fallout crossover also showcased how licensed universes could enhance rather than dilute Commander's design space. Radiation counters as negative proliferate targets, energy as a resource mechanic, and factions as deck identity all translated remarkably well from the video game's systems into MTG card design.

Hail, Caesar — Ave, True to Caesar

Caesar, Legion's Emperor leads the most disciplined military faction in the Wasteland in a Mardu (white/black/red) token strategy that builds an unstoppable army of Legion soldiers. Caesar creates Soldier tokens for each opponent you have during your end step, meaning in a four-player game he's generating three tokens automatically — before any combat or triggered effects. The deck builds on this foundation with Legion-flavored token doublers, attack triggers, and rewards for committing to aggressive multiattacks.

The Mardu color combination provides excellent tools for this strategy: white's token production and anthems, red's haste enablers and damage amplifiers, and black's removal and card advantage through spending life. Together they create a deck that can overwhelm opponents with pure creature count, then finishes games through combat damage or drain effects.

Thematically, Hail Caesar captures the Legion's ethos perfectly. Caesar's Legion values discipline, conquest, and the submission of all opposition to a single will. The deck rewards the player who dictates the pace of the game and punishes those who fall behind — much like the Legion's brutal march across the Mojave.

Science! — The Brotherhood of Steel

Dr. Madison Li channels the Brotherhood of Steel's scientific expertise in a Jeskai (white/blue/red) energy-and-artifacts deck that experiments with increasingly powerful technological combinations. The deck generates energy counters through artifact play and converts them into powerful token copies of your best artifacts — effectively duplicating your most valuable machines for free.

Energy as a resource mechanic creates a uniquely satisfying deckbuilding constraint. Unlike mana, energy accumulates across turns and can be spent at any time, enabling burst turns where multiple energy abilities fire in sequence. The deck's artifact base provides steady energy generation through passive triggered abilities, while blue's card draw ensures you have enough experiments queued up at all times.

Science! rewards players who enjoy building complex artifact engines and optimizing resource conversion. The payoff loop — generate energy through artifacts, spend energy to copy artifacts, use copied artifacts to generate more energy — captures the Brotherhood's belief that mastery of technology is humanity's highest calling and ultimate salvation.

Mutant Menace — The Wise Mothman's Radiation

The Wise Mothman leads a Sultai (blue/black/green) proliferate and radiation deck that turns the Wasteland's nuclear contamination into a devastating board control tool. The deck distributes Rad counters — Fallout's signature radiation mechanic — to opponents, causing them to mill cards and lose life at the start of their upkeep. Meanwhile, the Mothman and his proliferate engine spread these counters further and faster than opponents can remove them.

The poison/radiation angle gives Mutant Menace a unique win condition among the Fallout precons. Rather than defeating opponents through combat damage, the deck grinds them down through incremental radiation damage and library destruction. Sultai's access to blue counterspells, black removal, and green ramp makes the deck resilient while it slowly irradiates the table.

Mechanically, the deck introduces new players to the proliferate mechanic's multiplicative power. Adding one counter to each opponent is strong — proliferating doubles (or more) that effect across all your -1/-1 and rad counter sources simultaneously. The Wise Mothman rewards patience and incremental pressure, reflecting the cryptid legend's role as an omen of catastrophe that grows more powerful the longer it's ignored.

Scrappy Survivors — Dogs of the Wasteland

Dogmeat, Ever Loyal leads the Scrappy Survivors in a Naya (white/red/green) junk-equipment and recursion deck that turns Wasteland scraps into powerful weapons and armor. Whenever Dogmeat or another creature deals combat damage, you can search the top of your library for an Aura or Equipment card and attach it directly to a creature — turning Dogmeat's legendary loyalty into a constant stream of free equipment.

The deck's scrappy aesthetic translates into a remarkably efficient equipment strategy. Rather than paying the full attach cost for Equipment, Dogmeat's ability provides free attachment on hit, making your combat-damage creatures into equipment tutors. Green's creature base provides wide attack opportunities, white's equipment synergies add anthems and protection, and red's aggression closes games once the crew is fully geared up.

Scrappy Survivors celebrates the unbreakable spirit of Fallout's independent survivors — those who refused to join any faction and carved out their own corner of the Wasteland through determination and resourcefulness. The deck rewards flexible play and creativity with your equipment combinations, much like a good Fallout playthrough rewards players who find unexpected solutions to the Wasteland's challenges.
