The Five Families of New Capenna

New Capenna is Magic's Art Deco crime fantasy setting — a city built by angels and now controlled by five demonic crime families, each dominating a different district and operating according to their own ruthless code. The Commander precons for Streets of New Capenna are five complete decks, each representing one of the families and their distinct approach to power, vice, and survival in the city's competitive criminal ecosystem.

Each deck uses one of the format's three-color shard combinations, with Capenna's five families covering all five shards. This comprehensive coverage makes the Streets of New Capenna Commander set one of the most balanced in precon history.

Bedecked Brokers — The Shield Counter Kings

The Brokers maintain the pretense of a legitimate legal practice while running one of the city's most sophisticated criminal operations. Perrie, the Pulverizer, earns a reputation for decisive enforcement in a Bant (white/blue/green) deck built around shield counters and the unusual mechanic of rewarding having many different counter types on your permanents.

The deck's shield counter theme provides resilience — shielded creatures survive one removal spell — while Perrie's damage trigger converts accumulated counter variety into game-ending damage spikes. The Brokers' legal sophistication translates into mechanical complexity that rewards detailed knowledge of each counter type in play.

Obscura Operation — Information is Power

The Obscura family sells information to all five families — a dangerous game that requires perfect intelligence about everyone's position. Kamiz, Obscura Oculus, runs an Esper (white/blue/black) connive-and-unblockable strategy where refining your hand through connive charges up a select attacker to strike unimpeded.

Connive — the set's signature Obscura mechanic — filters cards while growing creatures, creating a dual-purpose effect that improves both hand quality and board presence simultaneously. Kamiz's ability to make one attacker unblockable ensures that the most valuable connive payoff always connects for maximum damage.

Maestros Massacre — Art Through Sacrifice

The Maestros are assassins who treat their work as high art, and their Commander deck reflects this perspective through casualty — a mechanic where sacrificing creatures copies spells. Anhelo, the Painter, commands a Grixis (blue/black/red) deck where sacrificing your own creatures generates spell copies that can be decisive as combat or removal spells.

The casualty mechanic rewards careful selection of sacrifice targets — creatures with death triggers or abilities that fire when they leave the battlefield provide compound value when sacrificed for casualty. Anhelo's deck is the Capenna precon with the highest skill ceiling, demanding precise timing and sacrifice selection for optimal results.

Riveteers Rampage — Fast, Hard, and Inevitable

The Riveteers provide the muscle that makes the city's criminal economy function, and their Commander deck reflects this physical dominance through the blitz mechanic — an alternate casting cost that grants haste and draws a card when the creature dies. Henzie 'Toolbox' Torre deploys Jund (black/red/green) creatures at reduced cost with immediate impact, then profits from their combat deaths.

Blitz creatures create a distinctive attack sequence: pay the blitz cost, get haste, attack, deal damage, draw a card. The recurring card draw from dying blitz creatures ensures hand refills even as the creatures themselves cycle through quickly. Henzie's deck is the most aggressive Capenna precon and rewards players who want to hit fast and hard.

Cabaretti Cacophony — The Party Never Ends

The Cabaretti family controls New Capenna's entertainment scene — the clubs, the performers, the parties that never end. Kitt Kanto, Mayhem Diva, runs a Naya (white/red/green) goad-and-tokens strategy where every turn is a new party and every creature at the party is encouraged — or forced — to participate.

The deck's goad effects force opponents' creatures to attack, creating chaotic combat situations that Kitt Kanto's token army exploits. While opponents spend their creatures on forced attacks into other opponents, Kitt Kanto grows her own performing troupe unbothered.

Cabaretti Cacophony is the most politically oriented Capenna precon, requiring the same table-reading skills as other goad-based decks. When the goad engine is working and opponents are perpetually fighting each other, Kitt Kanto's festive tokens advance uncontested toward a game-winning position.
