Deep Below the Surface

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan reveals what lies beneath Ixalan's surface: an entire underground civilization of ancient origin, surrounded by the plane's four surface factions all racing to claim its secrets. Vampires, pirates, dinosaur riders, and merfolk all descend into the caverns, each representing a different approach to exploration and conquest. The Commander decks for this set capture each faction's distinctive approach to discovering and exploiting the caverns.

The discover mechanic — a free-spell-casting variant tied to exiling cards from the top of your library — drives many of the set's most powerful moments. The Commander precons each leverage discover in different ways, using faction identity to contextualize what each civilization seeks in the depths.

Ahoy Mateys — The Pirate Fleet Descends

Admiral Brass, Unsinkable, leads Ixalan's pirate fleet into the caverns in a Grixis (blue/black/red) pirate tribal deck that leverages the depth of Magic's pirate card pool. The deck's central innovation is Admiral Brass's ability to return pirates from the graveyard directly to the battlefield when you attack, creating a recursive engine where every combat step potentially rebuilds your entire crew.

The synergy between aggressive pirate combat and graveyard recursion creates a deck that can overwhelm through repeated attacks. Even when opponents spend removal to clear the pirates, Admiral Brass simply raises the crew again. The deck rewards commitment to combat and the willingness to trade creatures freely, knowing they'll return at the next opportunity.

Ahoy Mateys is an excellent entry point for players who enjoy tribal strategies, offering a clear game plan with straightforward synergies while still having enough depth for experienced players to find optimal lines.

Explorers of the Deep — The Merfolk's Ancient Wisdom

Hakbal of the Surging Soul leads the Merfolk into the caverns seeking knowledge and ancient power in a Simic (green/blue) explore-and-counter strategy. Each explore trigger improves your creatures while also filtering your library, creating a self-improving engine where the deck literally gets better at finding what it needs with each passing turn.

The Merfolk's intellectual approach to exploration translates into one of Commander's more rewarding growth strategies. Rather than seeking treasure or conquest, Hakbal's Merfolk seek understanding — and the mechanical reward for that understanding is a board of creatures that have grown significantly from their starting point.

Players who enjoy counter-based growth strategies and gradual power development will find Explorers of the Deep deeply satisfying. The deck often presents a deceptive early game where modest-looking creatures become increasingly dangerous as explore triggers accumulate.

Veloci-Ramp-Tor — Discovering Dinosaurs

Pantlaza, Sun-Favored, leads the Sun Empire's dinosaur cavalry into the caverns in a Naya (white/red/green) discover-and-ramp strategy that puts enormous dinosaurs into play far ahead of schedule. The discover mechanic works particularly well for a dinosaur deck because many of the best dinosaurs in Magic have high mana costs — discover effectively gives you free access to the upper end of your curve.

The deck's powerful combination of cost reduction and direct-from-library deployment means that by the time opponents have established their mid-game boards, Pantlaza has already deployed dinosaurs that normally cost seven or more mana. The sheer size differential creates combat situations that most removal suites struggle to answer.

Veloci-Ramp-Tor is the Bloomburrow precon for players who enjoy big creature strategies and the satisfaction of cheating expensive cards into play. The deck rewards building a dense concentration of high-quality dinosaurs and trusting the discover mechanic to find them.

Blood Rites — The Vampire's Communion

Clavileño, First of the Blessed, descends into the caverns to convert every fallen creature into a loyal member of the Church of Dusk. Blood Rites is a Mardu (white/black/red) vampire tribal deck where Clavileño's ability to create Vampire tokens from creature deaths fuels an exponentially growing undead congregation.

The deck's blood magic grows faster the more chaotic the board becomes. In a typical Commander game where creatures die frequently through combat and removal, Clavileño generates a stream of Vampire tokens that eventually overwhelm any defensive position. The deck also includes drain effects that remove life from all opponents simultaneously, making every Vampire's conversion doubly valuable.

Blood Rites rewards players who can balance the vampire recruitment engine with targeted play. Knowing when to convert opponents' creatures into Vampires (through sacrifice effects) versus allowing combat damage to fuel the engine is the deck's primary decision point.
