Five Decks for the World of Monster Hunting

The Ikoria Commander decks were released alongside Magic's first true monster-hunting set, a plane where humans live in fortified enclaves and bond with the fearsome creatures of the wilderness. The five precons represented different aspects of Ikoria's mechanical identity: the mutate mechanic that merges creatures into hybrid monsters, the cycling-heavy Jeskai deck, the keyword-counter engine, and partner commanders that let two legendary creatures share the command zone.

With five decks — more than any previous Commander precon release — Ikoria Commander offered the widest variety of playstyles in a single wave. From the combo-oriented Arcane Maelstrom to the straightforward Human tribal of Ruthless Regiment, the set had something for every Commander player.

Symbiotic Swarm — The Keyword Counter Engine

Kathril, Aspect Warper enters the battlefield and immediately shifts power from the graveyard to the battlefield, placing a +1/+1 counter for each keyword ability found among creature cards in your graveyard. Then Kathril distributes those keyword counters freely to any creatures you control, converting your graveyard's accumulated abilities into a toolbox of keyword buffs. The Abzan deck mills itself aggressively to stock the graveyard with keyword-rich creatures before deploying Kathril.

The keyword counter system rewards deliberate graveyard construction. Creatures with flying, first strike, deathtouch, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample, and vigilance each contribute their keyword when in the graveyard, enabling Kathril to distribute eight or more different keyword counters in a single cast. The deck builds toward turns where Kathril enters, creates a massive ability distribution, and immediately represents a lethal threat or enables another creature to become one.

Enhanced Evolution — The Mutate Commander

Otrimi, the Ever-Playful is the centerpiece of Ikoria's mutate mechanic in Commander form. Whenever a creature mutates under your control, that creature mills the top four cards of each opponent's library. When Otrimi itself deals combat damage, you may return any mutate card from your graveyard to hand. This creates a recursive loop: mutate, mill opponents, attack, recur a mutate card, mutate again.

The Sultai deck treats mutate as a vehicle for assembling the most powerful combination of abilities onto a single threat. Unlike standard creature combat, mutated creatures combine text boxes from multiple cards, allowing the deck to create hybrid monsters with flying from one source, deathtouch from another, and a game-winning triggered ability from a third. The deck's inevitability comes from Otrimi's ability to continually recover mutate pieces from the graveyard.

Ruthless Regiment — Human Tribal Command

Jirina Kudro leads Ikoria's fortified humans in a Mardu Human tribal strategy where commander casts directly grow your board. Jirina creates a 1/1 Human Soldier token for each time a commander has been cast from the command zone this game when she enters, and whenever she attacks she exiles target creature or planeswalker with power less than or equal to the number of Humans you control. The deck rewards recasting Jirina repeatedly to accumulate both tokens and attack triggers.

The Human tribal shell supports Jirina with a suite of Human lords, combat tricks, and tribal synergies that convert the token army into a legitimate threat. The attack trigger doubles as removal, giving the deck proactive interactive tools that scale with board state rather than fixed power thresholds. As your Human count grows, Jirina's attack trigger can reach any creature on the board.

Timeless Wisdom — The Cycling Engine

Gavi, Nest Warden makes the first card you cycle each turn free and creates a 2/2 Dinosaur Cat token whenever you cycle while you have no cards in hand. The Jeskai deck is built almost entirely around cycling spells, using the free cycle each turn to filter rapidly through the deck while generating tokens from aggressive cycling in the same turn. Cycling-matters cards reward each discard, creating a self-reinforcing loop of card selection and board development.

The deck's mechanical identity centers on the tension between cycling to find the right answer and depleting your hand to trigger Gavi's token generation. The reward for emptying your hand through cycles is a free 2/2 each turn, incentivizing aggressive cycling rather than conservative hoarding. Timeless Wisdom games often feature turns where three or four cycles generate multiple tokens while simultaneously digging for a critical permanent or spell.

Arcane Maelstrom — The Instant Copy Engine

Kalamax, the Stormsire copies the first instant spell you cast each turn as long as Kalamax is tapped, and whenever you copy an instant Kalamax gets a +1/+1 counter, growing with every spell. The Temur deck uses tap effects, vigilance enablers, and combat to ensure Kalamax is tapped for as many instant copies as possible, building a rapidly growing creature alongside a chain of doubled spells.

The copy trigger creates compounding value — not only do you get two instances of every instant, but each copy grows Kalamax by one, and a larger Kalamax creates better copies of damage spells, counterspells, and draw spells. The deck includes a high density of powerful instants that warrant doubling: countermagic, draw spells, removal, and combat tricks all become twice as effective through the Kalamax lens.
