Planeswalkers as Commanders — A Historic First
Commander 2014 made history as the first product to include planeswalkers usable as commanders. A special rules update allowed the five planeswalker commanders in this set to be used in the command zone, opening a completely new design space for Commander gameplay. Planeswalker commanders interact differently from creature commanders — they don't deal commander damage, can be attacked directly by players, and their loyalty counters reset when they return from the command zone.
Each of the five mono-colored decks featured a planeswalker commander whose abilities represented the pinnacle of their color's strategic identity: Daretti's artifact mastery in red, Nahiri's Equipment forging in white, Freyalise's elf leadership in green, Teferi's temporal control in blue, and Ob Nixilis's demonic corruption in black.
Guided by Nature — Freyalise's Elf Engine
Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury creates 1/1 Elf Druid tokens that tap for green mana at plus two, destroys artifacts and enchantments at minus two, and draws a card for each Elf you control at her ultimate. The plus two ability provides both board presence and mana acceleration from the same activation, enabling turns where a single Freyalise activation creates an elf that immediately helps cast the next spell.
The mono-green deck is a classic Elf tribal build that uses Freyalise as both a commander and a mana rock multiplier. Each elf token generates green mana that can cast more elves, who tap for more mana, eventually generating enough to deploy Freyalise's ultimate for enormous card advantage. The deck transitions smoothly from elf-mana generation to using that mana to deploy overwhelming threats.
Built from Scratch — Daretti's Artifact Machine
Daretti, Scrap Savant loots at plus two, reanimates any artifact from any graveyard at minus two, and creates a Daretti emblem at his ultimate that returns artifacts from the graveyard whenever they're destroyed. His loot ability provides perfect card selection for finding the right artifacts while filling the graveyard with pieces that his minus two can immediately recur.
The mono-red deck breaks a fundamental assumption of Commander design — that red lacks card advantage and graveyard recursion. Daretti's persistent loot ability generates card quality while his reanimation creates resilience against artifact removal. The emblem from his ultimate makes the deck's artifacts effectively unkillable, ensuring that any artifact the opponent destroys simply returns to the battlefield at the end step.
