Entering the Dungeon
Adventures in the Forgotten Realms brings the world of Dungeons & Dragons to Magic: The Gathering, with four Commander precons representing different D&D character archetypes and adventure styles. The dungeon mechanic — a new permanent type that progresses through rooms, granting abilities as you venture deeper — drives the mechanical identity of the set's Commander products.
The four decks cover different class archetypes and exploration styles from D&D's tradition, ranging from dungeon-delving adventurers to arcane researchers, savage dragon-bond warriors to Equipment-focused champions.
Dungeons of Death — Venture Into the Unknown
Sefris of the Hidden Ways commands an Esper (white/blue/black) dungeon-ventures strategy where completing dungeons grants powerful abilities and Sefris herself triggers dungeon progression through creature deaths. The deck ventures into dungeons repeatedly, completing their final rooms for game-changing effects while using graveyard recursion to fuel Sefris's death triggers.
The dungeon system adds a compelling long-term goal to the game — you're always making progress through rooms, always one room away from the next bonus. Sefris's deck uses creature sacrifice to accelerate dungeon progression while converting those deaths into future recursion targets.
Planar Portal — Elsewhere Through Dark Magic
Prosper, Tome-Bound, opens Rakdos (black/red) portals to other planes, fueling a treasure-and-exile strategy where every spell cast from exile creates a Treasure token. The deck continuously generates exile access through various effects, then converts exile-cast spells into wealth that funds increasingly expensive plays.
Prosper's exile-matters strategy rewards finding and exploiting every available exile source — cascade, foretell, and Prosper's own triggered ability all contribute to the exile card count that drives Treasure generation. Players who enjoy resource accumulation and explosive late-game turns built on hoarded wealth will find this deck particularly satisfying.
Draconic Rage — Enrage the Dragon
Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients, channels Gruul (red/green) draconic fury into an enrage-and-tokens strategy where dealing damage to your own creatures triggers token creation. The deck deliberately damages Vrondiss and other enrage creatures to trigger their abilities, building a self-inflicted wound engine that paradoxically makes your team stronger with each hit taken.
The enrage mechanic rewards creative use of damage sources — ping effects, combat with skulk/unblockable creatures aimed at your own team, and deliberate blocking decisions all contribute to a strategy that turns vulnerability into power.
Aura of Courage — The Equipment Champion
Galea, Kindler of Hope, leads Bant (white/green/blue) in the format's Equipment archetype with a unique mechanic: the top card of your library is revealed, and if it's an Equipment or Aura, you can cast it for free. This effectively gives Galea an extended hand that refreshes every turn, providing Equipment and Aura acceleration that normally requires significant mana investment.
The deck combines green's creature base with white's premium Equipment and blue's library manipulation, creating a strategy that consistently deploys multiple Equipment or Aura cards per turn once Galea is in play. The free-cast mechanic means mana investment goes toward creatures to equip rather than the Equipment itself, creating unusually efficient threat deployment.
Aura of Courage rewards building with a high density of Equipment and Auras to maximize Galea's cast trigger frequency. Players who enjoy creature-enhancement strategies and the satisfaction of a fully armored champion creature will find this deck deeply satisfying.
