One Ring to Rule Them All
J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is perhaps the most beloved fantasy world in literature, and Magic: The Gathering's treatment of Middle-earth is one of the most thoughtful and carefully crafted crossover products ever produced for a trading card game. The Commander precons distill each faction's essence into mechanical designs that feel true to Tolkien's vision while playing excellently in the Commander format.
The four decks represent the major power blocs of Middle-earth: the Elven wisdom of Lothlórien, the human courage of Rohan, the hobbit resilience of the Shire, and the dark majesty of Mordor. Each captures its faction's spirit both aesthetically and mechanically.
Elven Council — Wisdom of the Eldest
Galadriel, Elven-Queen, embodies the graceful, far-seeing wisdom that makes the Elves of Middle-earth so formidable. Elven Council is a Selesnya (white/green) deck that generates scry tokens — represented as Elven 1/1 tokens — while using Galadriel's passive filtering ability to maintain card quality advantage. The deck's political nature reflects the Elves' role in Middle-earth as advisors and supporters rather than conquerors.
The deck rewards aligning your resources toward specific strategic goals and filtering aggressively to find the pieces you need. Galadriel's scry triggers ensure that even when the deck doesn't draw its most powerful cards, it's constantly improving its future draws.
Elven Council is the most control-oriented Lord of the Rings precon, rewarding patience and careful resource management over aggressive action. Players who enjoy gradual position-building and the satisfaction of drawing exactly the right card at the right moment will find Galadriel a deeply satisfying commander.
Riders of Rohan — The Horse Lords Charge
Éowyn, Shieldmaiden, leads Rohan's legendary cavalry in a Boros (white/red) tokens-and-combat deck. The deck creates Human Soldier tokens — representing Rohan's riders — and finds ways to maximize their combat impact through anthem effects and attack triggers. Éowyn's famous 'I am no man' moment translates into a mechanical ability to ignore creature-type-based restrictions.
Riders of Rohan is built for players who enjoy overwhelming opponents through superior combat presence. The deck creates many tokens, buffs them with aura-like effects, and attacks relentlessly. The Rohirrim don't strategize — they charge, and the deck plays in the same spirit.
Food and Fellowship — The Long Road Home
Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit, and Sam, Loyal Attendant, represent the heart of Tolkien's masterwork: the power of ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things through friendship and determination. Food and Fellowship is a Selesnya (white/green) Food token strategy where the partnership between the two hobbits generates both defensive sustenance and offensive momentum.
The deck creates abundant Food tokens, uses them to keep key creatures alive through difficult moments (reflecting Sam's endless care for Frodo during their journey), and leverages the Ring-bearer mechanic that appears across the Lord of the Rings set. The fellowship's resilience is mechanical — the deck can sustain significant pressure from opponents through efficient use of Food.
Frodo and Sam's partnership also reflects the deck's partner mechanic, where having both commanders available provides more options than relying on either alone. Managing when to deploy which commander and how their abilities complement each other is the deck's primary strategic depth.
The Hosts of Mordor — One Ring to Rule Them All
Sauron, Lord of the Rings, commands the dark forces of Mordor in the set's most thematically potent deck: a Grixis (blue/black/red) amass strategy that builds the singular Army of Mordor token while mechanically corrupting opponents through The Ring mechanic. As The Ring tempts different players across the table, it changes allegiances and creates political instability that Sauron exploits.
The amass mechanic creates a single enormous Army token that grows with each amass trigger. Sauron's ability to generate amass triggers repeatedly builds this army to game-winning size while The Ring's bearer faces increasingly powerful but corruption-tinged abilities.
Hosts of Mordor is the Lord of the Rings precon with the highest competitive ceiling. Building the Mordor army to a battlefield-controlling size while using The Ring's powerful late-game abilities creates a combination that's genuinely difficult to stop once established. The deck rewards players who enjoy single-target creature strategies backed by powerful spell-based disruption.
