Is Rhystic Study a Game Changer?

Yes. Rhystic Study is on the official Wizards of the Coast Commander Game Changers list. Either the table pays one on every spell, or you draw a card. Both outcomes favour you.

Why is Rhystic Study a Game Changer?

Rhystic Study is the most famous three-mana enchantment in Commander because both of its outcomes are good for you. Opponents either pay an extra mana on every spell they cast — a tax across an entire table for the rest of the game — or you draw a card. In practice the table pays early, stops paying when it matters, and you draw four cards in a turn. It also has a well-earned reputation for slowing games to a crawl as somebody asks "did you pay the one?" every single time. Few cards better justify a pregame heads-up.

What bracket can I play Rhystic Study in?

  • Bracket 1 & 2 — not allowed. A single copy of Rhystic Study puts your deck above Core.
  • Bracket 3 (Upgraded) — allowed, and it counts as one of your three permitted Game Changers.
  • Bracket 4 & 5 — no limit, so it costs you nothing here.
