Is Necropotence a Game Changer?

Yes. Necropotence is on the official Wizards of the Coast Commander Game Changers list. Pay life, draw cards, with no limit other than your life total.

Why is Necropotence a Game Changer?

Necropotence converts life into cards at a one-to-one rate with no cap. Starting at forty life in a format where most damage is optional, that is an enormous draw engine for three mana and a card that has been format-defining in every format it has ever been legal in. The skipped draw step and end-of-turn discard are meaningful in theory and rarely relevant to a deck built for it. Unbounded card advantage from a cheap permanent is about as pure an expression of this list as exists.

What bracket can I play Necropotence in?

  • Bracket 1 & 2 — not allowed. A single copy of Necropotence puts your deck above Core.
  • Bracket 3 (Upgraded) — allowed, and it counts as one of your three permitted Game Changers.
  • Bracket 4 & 5 — no limit, so it costs you nothing here.
