Is Aura Shards a Game Changer?

Yes. Aura Shards is on the official Wizards of the Coast Commander Game Changers list. Turns every creature you play into unconditional artifact and enchantment removal, permanently.

Why is Aura Shards a Game Changer?

Most removal costs a card. Aura Shards costs three mana once, then stops costing anything — every creature you cast afterwards destroys an artifact or enchantment, and in a token deck that means several triggers a turn. What makes it a Game Changer rather than merely good is the shape of the resulting game: opponents whose decks lean on mana rocks, equipment, or enchantment-based engines simply cannot keep a permanent on the battlefield, and there is no interaction available to them beyond killing the enchantment immediately. It reads as a value card and plays as a soft lock.

What bracket can I play Aura Shards in?

  • Bracket 1 & 2 — not allowed. A single copy of Aura Shards puts your deck above Core.
  • Bracket 3 (Upgraded) — allowed, and it counts as one of your three permitted Game Changers.
  • Bracket 4 & 5 — no limit, so it costs you nothing here.

This applies whether Aura Shards is in your 99 or in the command zone. Not sure how many you are running in total? Run your decklist through the analyzer — it flags every Game Changer it finds and shows the resulting bracket.
