Is Ancient Tomb a Game Changer?

Yes. Ancient Tomb is on the official Wizards of the Coast Commander Game Changers list. A land that taps for two, turning turn-one plays into things that should cost twice as much.

Why is Ancient Tomb a Game Changer?

Two mana from a land drop, for two life, with no setup and no card cost. Ancient Tomb is fast mana that does not occupy a spell slot, which makes it far harder to answer than a rock like Grim Monolith — there is simply no window where an opponent gets to respond. The effect compounds: it accelerates a turn-two commander, then pays for a protection spell later. Life loss is close to irrelevant in a format that starts at forty and where the games this land enables tend to be short. Its presence is one of the sharpest dividing lines between an upgraded deck and an optimized one.

What bracket can I play Ancient Tomb in?

  • Bracket 1 & 2 — not allowed. A single copy of Ancient Tomb puts your deck above Core.
  • Bracket 3 (Upgraded) — allowed, and it counts as one of your three permitted Game Changers.
  • Bracket 4 & 5 — no limit, so it costs you nothing here.

This applies whether Ancient Tomb is in your 99 or in the command zone. Not sure how many you are running in total? Run your decklist through the analyzer — it flags every Game Changer it finds and shows the resulting bracket.
