Is Mana Vault a Game Changer?

Yes. Mana Vault is on the official Wizards of the Coast Commander Game Changers list. One mana for a rock that taps for three, with a drawback most decks never feel.

Why is Mana Vault a Game Changer?

One mana for three is the kind of rate that defines the fast-mana category. Mana Vault does not untap normally and deals damage if you leave it tapped, but a deck aiming to win in the next few turns will never care about either clause. A turn-one Vault means a turn-two five-mana play, which is a tempo gap slower decks cannot close. It is also a well-known engine piece with untap effects, giving it the same fast-mana-plus-combo-piece profile as Grim Monolith.

What bracket can I play Mana Vault in?

  • Bracket 1 & 2 — not allowed. A single copy of Mana Vault puts your deck above Core.
  • Bracket 3 (Upgraded) — allowed, and it counts as one of your three permitted Game Changers.
  • Bracket 4 & 5 — no limit, so it costs you nothing here.

This applies whether Mana Vault is in your 99 or in the command zone. Not sure how many you are running in total? Run your decklist through the analyzer — it flags every Game Changer it finds and shows the resulting bracket.
