Understanding MTG Booster Pack Types

Magic: The Gathering has evolved its booster product line significantly over the years. Knowing which pack type to open — or simulate — matters enormously for your deckbuilding and collection goals.

Draft Boostersare the classic format: 1 rare or mythic rare, 3 uncommons, and 10 commons for a total of 14 cards. They're designed for Limited play — Booster Draft and Sealed — where the goal is to build the strongest deck possible from a small card pool. Draft boosters are widely available and typically the cheapest entry point into a set.

Set Boosters(available for sets released between 2021 and early 2024) took a different approach. With 10 cards per pack including up to 2 rares, a higher foil rate, and an “Art Card” slot, Set Boosters were designed for the pure pleasure of opening packs rather than for drafting. They bridged the gap between budget Draft Boosters and premium Collector Boosters.

Play Boosters replaced both Draft and Set Boosters in February 2024. A Play Booster contains 12 cards — 1 rare or mythic, 3 uncommons, and 8 commons — and is usable for both Limited play and casual opening. Sets from Murders at Karlov Manor onward ship exclusively in Play Booster format (plus Collector Boosters).

Collector Boosters are the pinnacle of the MTG booster product line. Each pack contains 14–15 cards in premium treatments: extended art, borderless, showcase, surge foil, and serialized variants. Collector Boosters feature 2–3 rares or mythic rares and 5 uncommons, with 8–12 of the 15 cards being traditional (or surge) foil — not the whole pack, but a clear majority. Our simulator mirrors that exact 8–12 foil range rather than rolling foil odds independently per card. They command a much higher price point but deliver the highest concentration of valuable and visually stunning cards in the game.

How Rarity Works in Magic: The Gathering

MTG cards come in four rarities, each color-coded by the expansion symbol: Common (black), Uncommon (silver), Rare (gold), and Mythic Rare (orange). The rarity system directly affects card availability and price.

In a standard booster, you are guaranteed one rare or mythic rare slot. The mythic rate varies slightly by product — roughly 1-in-8 packs yield a mythic in Draft Boosters, while Collector Boosters skew higher toward mythics. Our simulator replicates these exact rates, so your mythic pulls match real-world expectations.

Rares and mythics are the engine of the MTG secondary market. A single mythic like Mana Crypt (from special sets) or a format-defining planeswalker can be worth dozens or even hundreds of dollars. This is why Collector Boosters command a premium — they maximize your chances of pulling high-value cards in premium treatments.

Using the Pack Simulator for Commander / EDH

Commander — also known as EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) — is the most popular way to play Magic: The Gathering, and it's the format EDHcheck is built around. Foil Cards in MTG Packs

Foil cards — also called regular foils or traditional foils — are premium versions of cards with a holographic sheen across the entire card face. Every rarity can appear as a foil, and in most packs, one slot has a small chance of being a foil version of any card in the set.

Collector Boosters take foiling to the extreme, including surge foils,etched foils, and double rainbow foils depending on the set. In our simulator, foil pulls are marked with a ✦ indicator and may carry higher prices than their non-foil counterparts — especially for popular Commander staples.

Draft Boosters have the lowest foil rate (roughly 1 in 12 packs), while Play Boosters and Set Boosters sit slightly higher. Collector Boosters include multiple guaranteed foils per pack, which is a significant part of their appeal and price premium.
