Random Commander Generator
Stuck on what to build next? Filter by color, mana value, and playstyle, then generate a random legendary commander from Magic's full card pool — plus every precon and community deck already built around it on EDHcheck.
Color identity (exact match — leave blank for any)
Playstyle attributes (pick any number)
Commander pool is Scryfall's live card database — every legal commander, including the newest sets, is included.
How the Random Commander Generator works
Instead of picking from a fixed, hand-maintained list of commanders that goes stale the moment a new set releases, this tool builds a live search query against Scryfall's full card database every time you press Generate. Your color identity, mana value range, and playstyle attribute picks (landfall, proliferate, lifegain, and a dozen others) all translate directly into search terms, so the pool you're pulling from always includes every legal commander that exists right now — including cards from the newest set, the moment they're legal.
Once a result set comes back, the generator flickers through a handful of random names from that exact pool before settling on your actual pick — a small bit of slot-machine theater so "generate" feels like an event instead of an instant lookup. After it lands, it checks EDHcheck's own precon and community deck records for anything already built around that commander, so you can see real decklists instead of starting from a blank page every time.
FAQ
How does the Random Commander Generator pick a commander?
It runs a live search against Scryfall using whatever filters you've set (color identity, mana value range, playstyle attributes), then picks one legal commander at random from everything that matches. Nothing is pre-selected or hand-curated — the pool is Magic's entire legal card pool, filtered by your choices.
Does it include commanders from the newest sets?
Yes — because the search runs live against Scryfall rather than a static list, a new legendary creature is eligible the moment it's released and legal in Commander.
What do the color identity filters mean?
Selecting colors filters to commanders whose color identity is at most those colors — leaving every color unselected returns commanders of any color identity, including colorless.
What happens if no commanders match my filters?
The generator tells you outright rather than guessing — loosen the color, mana value, or attribute picks and try again. Very narrow combinations (a low mana value ceiling combined with several rare attributes at once) can genuinely have zero legal matches.
What does "No Decks on EDHcheck :(" mean?
It means nobody has analyzed or built a deck around that exact commander on EDHcheck yet — which, for a freshly generated commander, is often exactly the point. You'd be the first.
Do I need an account to use this?
No — generating commanders and browsing existing decks built around them is free and open to everyone. An account is only needed if you want to build and save your own deck afterward.
