Price Check
Magic: The Gathering Higher or Lower
One card, one price, one question. Is the next Magic card worth more or less? Real market prices, 2,500 Commander staples, and no idea how long you will last.
Checking prices…
A price guessing game for Magic players
This is a free MTG game in the style of the Higher Lower Game, played with Magic: The Gathering card prices instead of search volumes. You see what one card sells for, then call whether the card next to it is worth more or less. Get it right and the game keeps going. Get it wrong and that is the run.
The cards come from the 2,500 most-played Commander cards, so these are staples you have seen at a table rather than obscure filler. Prices are the current market prices from Scryfall, which is the same source behind the rest of the site.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play MTG Higher or Lower?
Two Magic cards appear side by side. The left card shows what it currently sells for. Decide whether the right card is worth more or less, and keep going until you call one wrong. Every correct answer moves the right card across and deals a new one.
Where do the card prices come from?
Scryfall, which aggregates market prices from TCGplayer. The game uses the standard non-foil USD price for each card, snapshotted when the card pool is rebuilt, so a round never waits on a live lookup.
Which Magic cards are in the game?
The 2,500 most-played cards in Commander by EDHREC rank, which keeps every card one you have plausibly seen. Prices in that pool run from about ten cents to over a thousand dollars, so the range stays wide without asking you to price obscure commons.
Are the rounds ever unfair?
No round is a coin flip by design. The two cards in any round are always at least 35% apart in price and never identical, so the answer is knowable rather than luck. Most rounds are much further apart than that.
Is the MTG price game free?
Yes. No account, no download, no limit on how many rounds you play. It runs entirely in your browser.
Why is a card worth more than I expected?
Commander demand, reserved list status and reprint history matter more than how strong a card looks. A widely played uncommon can be worth pennies while a mediocre rare that was printed once and never again is not. That gap is most of the game.
Once you know what your cards are worth
If the prices here made you curious about your own deck, the price checker totals a full decklist and finds budget swaps, and the bracket checker tells you what bracket that list actually lands in. Expensive does not mean powerful, and the two tools together make that gap obvious. There is also the card guessing game if you would rather be asked questions than answer them, and the land database if the mana bases in this game gave you ideas.
