Magic: The Gathering Card Guessing Game
Think of any Magic card, from any set ever printed, and answer yes or no. We'll name it in under 20 questions.
Shuffling every Magic card…
How the Magic card guesser works
This is a free MTG tool that plays twenty questions with you — a card guessing game in the style of Akinator, but for Magic: The Gathering. Picture any card you like, from Black Lotus to the most recent set, and answer each yes-or-no question honestly. Every answer cuts the field of possibilities down, and the game names your card, typically in about fourteen questions.
Behind it sits every unique Magic card in existence — more than 33,000 — with card data from Scryfall. Rather than eliminating cards outright, each answer re-weights how likely every card is, which is what lets the game recover if you answer one question wrong or misremember a detail. Questions are chosen for how evenly they split the remaining possibilities, so each one tells it as much as it can.
Frequently asked questions
How does the MTG card guessing game work?
Think of any Magic: The Gathering card and answer yes or no to each question. Every answer narrows the field, and the game names your card — usually in around 14 questions and never more than 20. It works on all 33,000+ unique Magic cards.
Is the MTG card guessing game free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to download and no limit on how many times you can play.
What happens if it guesses wrong?
Tell it which card you were actually thinking of and it gets recorded, so the questions improve over time. Answering one question wrong does not ruin the game either — the game weights answers rather than eliminating cards outright, so it can recover from a mistake.
Which Magic cards can it guess?
Every unique card in Magic: The Gathering — over 33,000 of them, from Alpha through the newest set — using card data from Scryfall. Tokens, emblems and joke-set cards are excluded.
Card rules that come up while playing
The guesser will ask whether your card costs three or less when you're thinking of a land, or whether it's a creature when you're thinking of a Vehicle. These are the rules those questions turn on.
Do lands have a mana cost?
No. Lands have no mana cost at all, which means their mana value is 0. So when the game asks whether your card costs 3 or less and you're thinking of a land, the answer is yes.
What is mana value in Magic: The Gathering?
Mana value is the total amount of mana in a card's mana cost, ignoring colour. A card costing {2}{U}{B} has a mana value of 4. It used to be called converted mana cost, and was renamed in 2021 — the two mean the same thing.
What is the mana value of a card with {X} in its cost?
X counts as 0 everywhere except on the stack. Fireball costs {X}{R}, so its mana value is 1 while it's in your hand, library or graveyard. Answer as though X were zero.
What is the mana value of a double-faced card?
The front face's. A transforming or modal double-faced card uses only its front face's mana cost while it's anywhere other than the battlefield, so ignore the back face when answering questions about cost.
What is the mana value of a split card?
Both halves added together, everywhere except on the stack. Fire // Ice costs {1}{R} and {1}{U}, so its mana value is 4. Room cards work the same way.
Is a Vehicle a creature?
Not most of the time. A Vehicle is an artifact, and only becomes an artifact creature while it's crewed. If you're thinking of a Vehicle and the game asks whether it's a creature, the more useful answer is no.
Is a planeswalker a creature?
No. Planeswalker is its own card type. A handful of cards turn a planeswalker into a creature temporarily, but the card itself is not one.
Can a card be an artifact and a creature at once?
Yes. Artifact creatures are both types simultaneously, so answer yes to both questions. The same is true of enchantment creatures and artifact lands.
What makes a Magic card colorless?
A card's colour comes from its mana cost, not its art or type. If the cost contains only generic mana — or there's no cost at all, as with lands — the card is colorless. That's why Sol Ring and every land count as colorless.
Is colorless the same as colour identity?
No, and the difference matters in Commander. Colour identity includes coloured mana symbols in a card's rules text as well as its cost, so a colorless artifact that produces black mana still has a black colour identity. This game asks about colour, not colour identity.
Which face does the game ask about on a double-faced card?
Always the front. Power, toughness, type and keywords are read from the front face, so answer for the side you'd cast. Colour is the exception — a card counts as every colour across both of its faces.
Are Snow-Covered lands different cards from basic lands?
Yes. Snow-Covered Island and Island are separate cards, and the snow versions are snow permanents. Both are basic lands, and both produce the same mana.
